Why Installing A Car FM Modulator May Not Be Worth It

by James M. Boersma

Two popular audio devices for using an MP3 player in a vehicle are a car FM modulator and an FM transmitter. Although both devices essentially provide the same service, there are major differences between the two when it comes to installation.

Taking a close look at the installation process is an important part of comparing FM modulators and FM transmitters. For this article I would like to clearly describe the steps for installing each product.

Here's a brief analysis of how to install a car FM modulator:

1. Detach the vehicle's dash in order to access and remove the stock stereo.

2. Carefully taking apart the original wiring.

3. Connecting the modulator to the car stereo, and plugging in the antenna wire to the modulator.

4. You must splice the powering wire from the modulator uniting it with the proper wire from the vehicle.

5. Connecting the grounding wire of the modulator to the proper place in the vehicle.

6. To connect the MP3 player or iPod to the modulator there will need to be a place for the audio cable to come out from (possibly a hole in the glove compartment) and connect to your audio source.

7. You'll need to put all the wires back together from the car stereo.

8. You'll need to reassemble the dash.

Whether you do this on your own or have a professional do it, you will be spending extra time and money on the installation. Imagine spending the better part of a Saturday getting your modulator installed, only to find out a few days later that it is not working properly. If you are planning to sell your car in the future, it may be unwise to install something as permanent as a car modulator.

Now let's look at the installation of an FM transmitter:

1. Plug transmitter into your MP3 player or iPod.

2. Power up the transmitter.

You can now broadcast your personal music over any FM radio. An FM transmitter is extremely easy to use and incredibly versatile. You can easily move it from vehicle to vehicle, as well as using it in your home, backyard or office.

Quality FM transmitters can broadcast audio for up to 150 feet. The importance of this is that transmitters with a large transmission distance will produce clear sounding audio. Cheap transmitters can usually only broadcast a few feet, which makes for very static filled audio.

FM transmitters can easily broadcast audio from MP3 players, TVs, computers, DVD players and many other devices. And since they are not permanently installed in your vehicle they can be used almost anywhere. The hassle of installing a car FM modulator doesn't make a lot of sense when you consider all of the advantages of an FM transmitter.
