I ran across this article last week that just really took my breath away. It was about the results of a survey they had done about what band readers thought was the greatest rock band in American rock and roll history. And, I couldn’t even guess what the result would be, with all the great choices. But what shocked me was that readers picked Pearl Jam.

That’s run against every band that came out the United States in the past 60 years. I could buy it if it were about bands from the 90s or alt rock bands or something, but that’s not what it was.

I was just so sure that there must be other classic groups out there that would rank so much higher than Pearl Jam. I don’t know, it just seems improbable that 60 years of music didn’t peak until 1994.

Then I really thought about it for a while. Pearl Jam has really produced some excellent music over the years. I could kind of see the point.

There are dozens of bands one could have considered for this contest: everything from Jimi Hendrix to the Clash, Alice Cooper to Nirvana. But none of them really stacked up to Pearl Jam.

So, after thinking about it for a good long while, I guess Pearl Jam really does kind of deserve their position. They’ve really been consistently at the top of their game ever since Ten came out in the early 90s. And they’ve just sort of stayed there, producing awesome music.

I am honestly surprised to be saying this, but I’m on board with the masses on this one in crowning Pearl Jam the greatest American rock band of all time. It really is a deserved honor.

But Pearl Jam has truly been a breath of fresh air in the world of corporate-run rock acts and high-wage attention whores. They’ve just managed to keep it real while not falling into the personality or drug problems that plague so many other groups. And that’s why I have to give it to the band, they’re great.
