Learn To Play Guitar Songs By Taking A Few Simple Suggestions

by Emily Diaz

In order to start to play guitar songs, you will need to begin playing with a tuned guitar. If you your guitar isn't tuned, when you try your song, it won't sound like the song you thought your were trying to play. You will have to become skilled at reading the guitar tabs in order to play guitar songs.

If you want to play guitar songs, then you don't only want to know of the tabs, but you will have to learn to listen to a song like a pro. The very first step you need to make is to listen extremely purposefully to all of the songs you want to play. If you are just beginning, you need to stick with songs that are going to more simple in nature, such as 3-chorded songs, using simple chords.

Once you listen to new songs, be sure to pay specific attention to both rhythm and timing - that is, when are the strings being strummed? When you listen about 3 times at least, you should be able to follow the song by reading along with your guitar's tab, like following along when a story is being read. Repeat this until you have the rhythm and the timing of the song down.

After you complete with the steps of listening a number of times, then reading along with the guitar tabs, then it's time to pick up your instrument. When the song is playing, quietly play along. Don't play so loud you don't hear the song - you are trying to copy what's being played.

The final step after you've more or less mastered the timing as well as the strumming, is to play without the music being played - try it solo. Turn the music on when you get stuck and need to refresh your memory. Only practice one song at a time. Master the song you are learning at the moment, before you try to move on to the next. You know you're ready to move to another song when you can sing and play at once.

One other great tip is to record yourself playing with a video recorder. After you are done with the song, then view yourself on the television. The point is to see your mistakes, and almost become your own teacher.

Be sure to follow these tips and in so doing you will learn to play guitar songs. Don't lose heart to do so, and make sure you practice patience as well. Do not be too hard on yourself when you make mistakes, this is par for the course. If you keep repeating some mistake, you will need to take a break before you get too frustrated. Frustration only makes more mistakes.
