Is it worth getting new carpet?
If there is sewage involved you can almost bet you will need to get replacement carpets. A qualified technician who follows the IICRC standard will most probably remove the carpets.
Are the Walls also Wet?
Sometimes the water has not only affected the carpet but the water has damaged the walls at the same time. In many cases, it is necessary to dry the wet walls as well. A professional flood damage restorer would have access to inspection equipment such as a borescope and moisture meter to determine any damage. One way to dry inside walls is to drill holes underneath the skirting board and duct air into it.
Are there water damaged timber floors underneath the floor coverings?
Timber floors can be difficult to dry because they can easily warp (parquetry flooring especially). One way wood to dry them is by using an Injectidry. These systems suck the water out though the floor with suction plates placed on the floor for around 3 days.
How to Dry Carpets
A common method of doing this is by placing an air mover between the carpet and the underlay so that there is air blowing between. The carpet is effectively what we call tented. Again this may not be a suitable restoration method for all cases. Also, sometimes the carpet underlay may need to be completely removed and dried elsewhere, or replaced.
Is it rubber underlay underneath the carpet?
In most situations it will be either foam or rubber underlay underneath the carpet. It is important to note that foam underlay can take some time to restore. Each type of underlay have difference characteristics. Also, consider the replacement cost for the underlay.
Only some issues have been considered here. The main issue to note is that mold can grow within 24 hours if the conditions are right. Which is why it is important to dry down building, carpets, floors etc properly. Failing to do this can lead to a mould problem which can cost a lot more to repair.
