Advice For Tuning Your Guitar

These past few years, more and more young people (and older ones as well) have started taking an interest in music, whether by going to concerts or by studying and even learning how to play an instrument. For instance, many choose the guitar, as it is not exactly hard to master and can accompany just about any type of music, from rock to jazz and even classical music. When learning how to play the guitar, one of the first things you need to grasp is the “art” of tuning it so that the pitch will be perfect.

One thing you need to do before tuning your guitar is make sure the strings are properly installed. If you’re not careful with this, a guitar can actually become a hazard, so take some time and check each and every one of them. If the strings are new, you might also want to stretch them a bit, by holding each one down on the neck of the guitar with one hand and giving it a few gentle tugs with the other.

Secondly, remember to use a guitar tuner or a pitch fork at least until you accumulate some experience in tuning. You don’t even have to get an expensive one; the regular kind will do just fine. Use these instruments to tune the Low E string, and then tune the others by ear. This will help you get used to the sound and it will improve your musical abilities as well. In time and with enough practice, you will most certainly be able to tune it completely by ear.

Another thing to remember is that guitars can go out of tune even if (or should we say especially if) not played often. This is why it’s important that you always check the pitch before starting to play. Plus, leaving your guitar in extreme temperatures can affect the strings and the quality of the sound, as can dropping it or other types of mechanical shock.

Finally, there’s always the option of getting a more experienced friend set up the guitar for you the first couple of times, just so that you will learn how it’s done. However, that is not by any chance a permanent solution, nor is it one that will help you on the long run. After all, you will always need to tune your guitar, so you might as well start learning from the beginning.
